Open Borders America: Shelters for Migrants Under Scrutiny in MA

This week in crime includes a no-mask ban and berry picking.

Massachusetts Republicans have formally submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to several organizations and allege the money the state is spending on illegal migrants is cloaked in “secrecy.” They are demanding a full accounting. “The Healey-Driscoll Administration has shrouded nearly 1 billion spent in secrecy, leaving Massachusetts residents in the dark,” Republican Party Chair Amy Carnevale said in a statement. “They have withheld critical information on 600 incidents involving police, fire and EMT.”

The state GOP claims the administration is not providing the information to the public. State Senator Bruce Tarr proposed an amendment to the budget that requires services provided to shelters to have competitive bidding. State Senator Ryan Fattman said the local government needs to explain how the $1 billion is being spent through their vendors and identify the 600 public safety crimes committed in the last year. “That’s almost two per day,” he explained.

Carnevale said Tarr’s proposed amendment was “aimed at ensuring accountability and efficiency [and] was unfortunately blocked by the Democratic supermajority. Similar efforts were proposed by the House GOP caucus but were also blocked.” She added that the party is “standing against the veil of secrecy and the obstructionist efforts of the Healey-Driscoll Administration and the Democratic supermajority.”

This Week in Crime

Public Mask Ban Helps Apprehend an Illegal Migrant

A new mask ban law in Nassau County, New York, helped police apprehend an illegal migrant who was carrying a 14-inch knife. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman told the New York Post that Wesslin Omar Ramirez Castillo, 18, was stopped under the Mask Transparency Act, which made it possible for officers to “stop and interrogate an individual who was carrying a weapon with the intent to engage in a robbery.” He added, “Passing this law gave police another tool to stop this dangerous criminal.”

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed to law enforcement that Castillio was originally from Guatemala and illegally crossed the southern border into the US in 2019. He is charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, and violating the 90-Mask Transparency Act, The Post explained. “This is just another example of how important it is to vet every migrant before admitting them into our country,” Blakeman said. “Nassau is not a sanctuary county.”

Stop Stealing Berries

Brevard County, FL, takes its berries seriously. Several illegal migrants were arrested last week, suspected of picking thousands of pounds of palmetto berries. The local sheriff, Wayne Ivey, blasted DC lawmakers for their “complete and total failure” to stop the flood of undocumented people into the country.

In a video on Monday, August 26, he announced the eight suspects, four of them illegal migrants, were arrested for allegedly stealing about $7,300 worth of the berries from a private property and then loading the 9,000-pound bounty into the back of a U-Haul. Ivey argued that the case “may not seem like a big deal to some, it is actually what this case revealed about the subjects who were arrested and the fact that they are in our country illegally that drives me absolutely insane and will most likely tick you off as well.” Two of the migrants arrested are applying for US citizenship so they cannot be deported, and Ivey said others had been deported before and had prior felony arrests:

“The best part for me is that when we ask why this person can’t be deported or why is this person still in our country after committing multiple crimes, we’re told that unless they commit a violent felony, they’re not going to be deported no matter how many nonviolent crimes they’ve committed.

“Please understand, this is not a failure on our partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Border Patrol or even Department of Homeland Security. This is a complete and total failure on Washington, D.C., for not allowing the laws of our great nation to be enforced.”

Briefly …

On Wednesday, August 29, the California Senate passed AB 1840, the “California Dream for All” program, which would provide qualified applicants with up to $150,000 to use as a down payment for a first home. This includes illegal migrants. “Undocumented individuals have historically been removed from housing initiatives because of federal restrictions,” said the author of the bill, Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, a Democrat. “Ensuring universal access by all borrowers will contribute to the overall success and vitality of California.”

The legislation is now in the hands of Governor Gavin Newsom (D), and if it passes, the Dream for All program will become the first in the nation to allow illegal immigrants to purchase homes.

Notable Quotes

After 9,000 pounds of palmetto berries were stolen from a private property in Florida, Sheriff Levy had some strong words for lawmakers at the Capitol:

“Why don’t you allow our Customs and Border Patrol agents to secure our damn border like our laws allow or get the hell out of the way and I’ll do it with the help of sheriffs from across the country who actually believe in enforcing the law and are sick and tired of this crap.”
