Migrants Warned It’s Time to “Self-Deport”
President-elect Donald Trump appointed Tom Homan, who had served as the acting director of ICE during his previous term, as the new “border czar.” The new appointee wasted no time in warning migrants that this administration would not be as tolerant as the current one. In a Fox News interview, Sean Hannity asked if migrants already in the country would have a “grace period.” Homan’s response: “Criminals and gang members get no grace period. While we’re out prioritizing the public safety threats and national security threats, if you wanna self-deport, you should self-deport because, again, we know who you are, and we’re gonna come find you.” He continued:
“So if you wanna self-deport, that’s fine. But criminals and gang members, they get no favors from this administration. You came to this country illegally, which is a crime. You committed crimes against United States citizens, some heinous crimes. You get no grace period. So we’re coming for you.”
Homan suggested that noncriminal migrants also self-deport. That way, they’ll have time to put everything in order and “leave with their family all together.”
During an interview with CBS News in October, Homan said that with Trump’s plans for mass deportation, “families could be deported together.” He also responded to some of the fear around Project 2025, which Trump has repeatedly denied any ties to, regarding removal of migrants. “It’s not going to be a mass sweep of neighborhoods. It’s not going to be building concentration camps. I’ve read it all. It’s ridiculous,” he said of the project.
Blue Cities Dismantling Immigrant Shelters
Sanctuary cities are busy phasing out some of their immigrant facilities, partially because the number of migrants flooding their cities has diminished, and partly because of Trump’s win and his vow for mass deportation.
In New York City, officials have announced the closure of several shelters that had housed hundreds of migrants. Randall’s Island is scheduled to shut down by February. It had been designed to hold up to 3,000 people. Mayor Eric Adams is ending the widely unpopular city’s debit card system that paid out $3.2 million to 2,600 migrant families, Fox News reported.
In Chicago, there are plans to close multiple housing facilities by December 1. The largest, which holds around 1,500 migrants in the Inn of Chicago, will close today (November 15).
A state panel in Massachusetts is recommending cuts after a study showed taxpayers would be on the hook for $1 billion were they to include migrants in homeless shelters next year.
Crime Update
The “South American Theft Group” has been terrorizing the US for the past decade, at least. The organized group is made up of migrants from Chili, Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru, and have targeted wealthy homes. “They travel to cities across the nation – including in Maricopa County [Arizona] – and steal millions in untraceable items,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchel told New York Post. “This is a group that is taking advantage of the relationship that certain countries in South America have with the United States so that they don’t have to have a lot of scrutiny coming in.”
According to authorities, the migrants get into the US on a tourist visa so they can enter the country without background checks. They can then commit their crimes and return home, selling their stolen goods internationally. Since they are careful not to commit violent crimes, they do not have to worry about bail in most states.
This week, members of the group used saws to break into a Long Island, NY, jewelry store. They were arrested and let go without bail, and then used saws to cut off their ankle monitors and disappear.
“It’s a damn disgrace,” Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said.
Of the six who were arrested, five were set free since the crime was not bail-eligible. The sixth person had an open warrant for crimes in Pennsylvania, according to The Post. “Two of the five never showed up to be fitted with ankle monitors; the other three sawed theirs off.”
