Failed Border Brings Fatal Consequences
As migrants flood unopposed across the border, violent crime is on the rise. Salvadoran migrant Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez was recently arrested for the rape and murder of Rachel Morin, a mother of five. Outrage spread across the nation as the details became known: This wasn’t his first murder, however, and the illegal alien managed to cross into the US four times in a year, three of those times within just two months.
Hernandez, 23, first arrived illegally in the US in January 2023 near El Paso, Texas. Then, in the same month, he was caught again crossing in New Mexico. He was later apprehended a third time in February 2023, also in New Mexico, the Department of Homeland Security told the New York Post. He was kicked out of the US each of those times, but on his fourth attempt, the migrant was able to get in undetected, becoming one of the so-called “gotaways.”
Hernandez allegedly murdered woman in El Salvador just days before he first crossed illegally into the US. After his fourth crossing, the one that went undetected, he was only in the nation for a few weeks before allegedly assaulting a nine-year-old girl and her mother during a home invasion in Los Angeles. It was just five months later that he allegedly killed Morin while she was walking on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in Bel Air, CA.
The victim’s family, as well as officials, expressed concerns that Hernandez might be a serial killer. The family’s lawyer, Randolph Rice, said:
“Using the law of probability where you murder someone in El Salvador in January, you go to California in March and commit assault on a mother and daughter, then there’s a gap from March to August when he rapes and murders Rachel, followed by another 10 month gap until he’s arrested … it’s hard to think he hasn’t committed another crime in those periods or gaps of time.”
Rachel’s mother, Patty, slammed President Biden and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. She claimed the president never reached out to her and that Mayorkas referred to her daughter during a press briefing as an “individual” instead of humanizing her by using Rachel’s name. Patty also criticized the secretary for not saying her daughter’s killer was an illegal immigrant, referring to him only as a “criminal.”
No CA National Guard to Stop Migrants at Border?
Governor Gavin Newsom (R-CA) is in the news again, this time for his claim that he doubled the National Guard at the border, presumably to help stem the flow of illegal migrants and drugs into the nation. But that isn’t so, according to Fox News correspondents Matt Finn and Bill Melugin.
Melugin said he had not seen a single state National Guard soldier in Jacumba, an area with myriad crossings of adult men from around the world. He claimed that border patrol is overwhelmed and that migrants are wandering around on highways and calling Lyfts for rides into the interior.
“I sent Gov. Newsom’s [statement] to a BP agent in Jacumba, who responded by laughing & telling me CA ‘isn’t doing s—’ to help them with illegal crossings there, and any soldiers that they see there are National Guard from other states working w/DHS under federal Title 10 order,” he said.
Finn commented on X: “We’re at the CA border right now in Jacumba, Governor Newsom. We see migrants illegally crossing all hours of the day. From China, Iran, Yemen. Nepal. Haven’t seen a single CA National Guard over the past week.”
For his part, the governor blamed the Republicans for the problems at the border: “Everybody needs more resources, and the Republican Party has been consistently standing in the way of providing the resources to support the men and women working hard, not only here at the border, but throughout the state of California and this country, to address the issues related to the border.”
In the Polls
In a recent CBS News/YouGov poll, a majority of Hispanic respondents are in favor of mass deportation of illegal migrants. According to its findings, 62% of registered voters favored a “new national program to deport all undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally.” Of those polled, 53% of Hispanics, 67% of whites, and 47% of blacks would approve of such a program.
