If you thought Mitt Romney was obnoxious in 2016 when he was “disqualifying” GOP presidential frontrunner, then nominee, then president-elect Donald Trump in tireless attempts to give credence to mindless progressive narratives, well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
A Sen. Mitt Romney, which seems a sure thing by all accounts of his race vs. Democrat Jenny Wilson, will be a three-handkerchief soap opera of playing along with, wringing his hands over, and expressing heartfelt regret about loaded progressive storylines smearing the Trump administration and the surge of populist nationalism in the Republican Party and America at large.

Liberal globalist Romney, who by no sane definition of the term can even be described as a “conservative,” has foreshadowed the scripted weepiness to come with his pathetic defense of our thoroughly dishonest establishment media as “very much our friend.” The comments came in an online posting on his website and were a response to President Trump’s tweet that the “Fake News Media” are “the true Enemy of the People.”

There is no reason to go into great detail on Romney’s comments, the usual stew of weak and banal platitudes that losing Republican establishment figures have been spouting for a couple of decades now in the face of dominant progressive framing on issues of the day. There is one bit of key wording, however, that gives away Romney’s role in the scripted play.
While mindlessly prattling on about the values of a truth-seeking media, as if we remotely have that today, Romney wrote, “The free press dispelled the false conspiracies about the 9/11 attacks, President Obama’s birth, and Joe McCarthy’s lurking communists. The work of a free press is essential.”
All three of the examples of supposed “false conspiracies” (McCarthy was right) presented by Romney can be said to have had the support of a portion of right-leaning Americans who reject the political establishment. In other words, the kind of people who support Trump. Even though he is supposedly a Republican, Romney didn’t point out a single demonstrably false conspiracy or distortion popular with liberals, such as global warming being “settled science” or Planned Parenthood providing a full spectrum of health care for women.

Romney doesn’t point out progressive myths because that is not his job. His function in the U.S. Senate will be to give full credence to establishment attacks on Trump and his populist movement via sad-sack, head-shaking “regretful” denunciations of people he pretends to want to side with. Romney has been remarkably consistent in pursuing his appointed role well after he and Trump reputedly buried the hatchet. In October he furthered progressive portrayals of border security by decrying the “heartbreak” of separating members of families of criminals who attempt to steal their way into our nation as a “dark chapter in American history.”
In an August post on the one-year anniversary of a march by fringe far right elements in Charlottesville, Va., that ended in violence, Romney defended the notorious Black Lives Matter movement and generously ladled out progressive buzzwords meant to define “hate.” “We must insist that those we elect as our leaders respect and embrace Americans of every race, sexual orientation, gender, and national origin,” he wrote. “In this country, it must be electorally disqualifying to equivocate on racism.”
That word “equivocate” hangs in the air like a giant meatball. It’s clear Romney is reserving to himself the right to define which elected officials aren’t toeing the anti-racism line to his satisfaction. As he revealed in 2016, the official he has in mind is Trump.
He has said this again in 2018. In an op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune in June, he vowed to call out Trump when he transgresses the Romney Racial Equivocation Line. “I have and will continue to speak out when the president says or does something which is divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest, or destructive to democratic institutions,” he arrogantly wrote.

Romney can’t bring himself to criticize Black Lives Matter yet paints the leader of the Republican Party, Donald Trump, as a dangerous loose cannon constantly saying or doing “something” racist, sexist, blah, blah, blah.
This is what we have to look forward to for the next six years as this posturing poseur assumes his role as “conservative” enabler of progressive establishment fiction. The media will heap praise on him for it, of course, in a true spirit of non-partisanship so befitting of this great “friend” to American freedom. I’m choking on the saccharine just thinking about it all.
The laurels are already pouring in. When The Washington Post’s laughably ridiculous house “conservative” Jennifer Rubin is crowning you “Distinguished pol of the week” for your heroic defense of fake news media people like her, you know your time in DC is going to be a smooth ride.
