We are in the midst of a knockdown, drag-out gun debate for the ages. Liberals are calling for more gun control laws, even though the current ones aren’t enforced. Conservatives are suggesting armed teachers via concealed carry. The mainstream media has openly sided with Democrats. They have dropped the Russian collusion hoax investigation coverage in hopes to score gun control agenda points. Democrats have all but said, “we want full gun control and confiscation.” If the Democrats aren’t careful, they are going to overplay the gun issue.
In the past, gun-free school zones were highly favored. The Gun Free School Zone Act of 1990 was signed and there were supposed to be no more shootings. Since then, there have been 186. After a high profile incident, the sitting president would make a call for Congress to act. Often, this led to nothing and the news cycle would continue to the next hot story.
New Ideas, Same Arguments
Now, we have a president who is offering up a new idea that could greatly impact school shootings but Democrats can’t risk having President Trump find success with this issue. They will be exposed for their incompetence and emotional manipulation. Trump would show that he has the competence Democrats say he doesn’t and this would be damaging in a way that little else can.
In the past, public opinion was on the side of the Democrats. Many thought it was a good idea to keep guns out of school, even if their children were vulnerable to the next maniac. They sold the bill of goods based on feelings, as they so often do.
In a recent CBS poll, 44% of respondents stated they would like to see armed teachers in schools. This is dangerous for Democrats because this shooting isn’t even two weeks old and nearly half of the people are in favor of Trump’s idea. Trump has proven to be a persuasive figure to the public.
Every time the country goes through a tragedy such as Parkland, Florida, Democrats appeal to feelings. They never offer up any solution that could be successful. Seeing as 44% already agree suggests that Americans are tired of the Democrats reaction and are willing to look in another direction.
Real Solutions
Trump is offering up viable solutions for arming well-trained teachers and Democrats know armed teachers may work. However, they can’t admit this because of their gun hating base. The further left the DNC has gone, the less wiggle room they have on this issue; they refuse to see that it alienates centrists and independents, which is a larger number than the fringe.
In a Washington Post article, the writer and many others give their opinions about concealed carry by teachers, stating it’s a “terrible idea.” The truth is they are scared. They know the political impact Trump is having and his ability to be successful. More and more people are starting to see that he is competent. The media’s daily attacks have worn thin on the American population and their strategy is failing.
On the issue of gun violence, Democrats have failed. They know this but the problem is America has finally realized it. If the Democrats aren’t careful, they are going to self-implode in the midterms. They are already having issues with the infamous Devin Nunes memo. If Democrats play this too much or say too much, they risk alienating more voters, specifically independents. After 2016, independents are tough to come by for Democrats.
