In an almost incomprehensible web of political intrigue, the fact that likely Democratic nominee Joe Biden requested the unmasking of Michael Flynn appears to be greasing the wheels of the apologist media. As these outlets ramp up a well-oiled defense machine, chances are excellent that the American public will be subject to an onslaught of airtime and column inches in defense of Mr. Biden. People, however, should understand that much of this coming media madness is nothing more than good old-fashioned political mudslinging to protect the man they wish to occupy the Oval Office.
Battle stations will be taken up under the guise of legality. What do we mean by that? You can read exhibit “A” in the May 14 edition of The Los Angeles Times. “The declassified document does not show that Biden did anything improper,” Times writer Chris Megerian wrote in trying to vindicate the former vice president. Indeed, “Nothing Joe Biden did was illegal,” will be the mantra by the esteemed scribes.
A few of the top-tier members of the apologist media will be a bit more deft in excusing Biden’s actions requesting the unmasking of Michael Flynn. The New York Times, for example, did not mention Biden by name in their Flynn article, instead deciding to wage a frontal assault on the Trump Administration by questioning the veracity of the whole kit and caboodle. Adam Goldman and Mark Mazzetti’s article in The New York Times titled, “Trump White House Rewrites History, This Time About Flynn” on May 14 is entirely devoid of any news, per se. It is merely a one-sided rehash of what happened to Michael Flynn, when, and why. Thus, the question arises why this was published now. Could it be because the Times’ candidate of choice is in a bit of hot water?
You’ve got to give the Times points for a good head fake.
Then there is the man himself – Joe Biden. Politico reported, “Biden has denied wrongdoing in connection with the Flynn case.” This sentence appeared as its own paragraph, which is tantamount to putting it in bold.
Fighting Back
Mercifully, there are a few of the chosen legacy media outlets willing to call it like it is. The Wall Street Journal editorial board bellied up to the front lines with a clarion call: “The media cordon sanitaire that protects Democrats will say this is no big deal because unmasking is routine and legal.” Then they doubled down on why it matters:
“The Flynn unmasking is important because it occurred amid a media frenzy over supposed Trump campaign collusion with Russia. Leaks to the Washington Post about the conversations between the Russian ambassador and both Mr. Flynn and soon-to-be Attorney General Jeff Sessions were played up as central to the collusion scandal. They caused Mr. Sessions to recuse himself from the Russia probe and Mr. Flynn to be fired. While unmasking isn’t illegal, leaking intelligence is.”
Not stopping there, the WSJ board connected the dots. “Mr. Biden’s unmasking request was made on Jan. 12, 2017—the day the Washington Post reported on the Flynn-Russia conversation. Mr. Biden has some explaining to do.”
Ya think?
The former vice president’s actions are not merely a matter of legality but character. In requesting the unmasking of Flynn, he signaled an intent to damage the incoming Trump Administration – to cut it off at the knees. Damn a peaceful transition to power, full steam ahead because party politics are all that matters.
While the apologist media tries to parse out the legality of Mr. Biden’s actions, their defense carries a hollow ring to it. Unable to bury this story, they twist and turn it into a pretzel to justify Joe Biden’s actions – not to mention his lying about it on national television. But finally, finally, the truth is out there about the crimes committed against Michael Flynn and who had a hand in it. The question is whether the American people will buy what the apologist media is selling or see it for what it is: a defense of their candidate.
