A video of New York City Police officers being assaulted by a group of illegal immigrants was making the rounds earlier this week, and it wasn’t pretty. Two of the Big Apple’s finest were shown on West 42nd Street near Times Square wrestling someone to the ground while others piled on with kicks and punches. It looked to all the world like a mob was about to form and overwhelm the officers.
The incident occurred at 8:30 pm on Saturday, January 27, in Manhattan when the officers asked a group of immigrants to move on. But they seemed to be in no mood to comply and started pounding on the policemen in short order, with several others joining in the fracas. Thankfully, the NYPD managed to gain the upper hand, and four people were taken into custody. This is, of course, where the situation should have ended.
But that is not the case. The four were arraigned and then released without bail. The New York Post reported that “Cops believe the group could have hopped on a bus bound for California Wednesday after giving phony names to a church-affiliated group that helps migrants get rides out of the city, according to law enforcement sources.”
The video showed another four migrants involved in the attack. A fifth was picked up and released but then another two more were arrested and arraigned. Finally, one of them – 24-year-old Yohenry Brito – was held on bail because he had four prior arrests.
If nothing else, the video and subsequent release of almost all the perpetrators demonstrates how law enforcement is being stretched to the breaking point with the influx of illegal immigrants. What do laws mean to those who broke the rules to get into the country in the first place? Nothing. Which is why open borders are so dangerous. These people have absolutely nothing to lose by violating US law, and there are tens of thousands now hanging around sanctuary cities with nowhere to go save whatever shelter the cities are willing to offer them.
Some are staying free in hotel rooms, others in so-called tent cities where disorder and mayhem run rampant. New York authorities were so rattled by a recent “massive brawl” and fatal stabbing in the Randall’s Island shelter that security cameras are being installed and shelter metal detectors are likely to follow.
Containing Violent Immigrants a Priority
New York isn’t the only place with violent immigrants. A Brazilian man in Massachusetts was arrested for the third time in the Bay State this week. The Boston Herald reported that 21-year-old Lucas Vilaca Moreira Fontenelle was finally snagged after robbing a bodega in Milford. But that was after he was found guilty of two counts of assault and battery in Framingham. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, his sentence was suspended.
Lawlessness and property crime perpetrated by immigrants are escalating across the country as well. Is it too much to imagine they will begin forming gangs to take what isn’t theirs, not caring if they have to hurt a few American citizens who get in their way?
In a suburb of Chicago, six illegals were recently arrested for stealing $10,000 worth of merchandise from a local Macy’s department store. “I believe that six felony arrests in one day illustrate that migrant criminal activity is a real problem,” Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis told the local ABC News affiliate.
A House Judiciary Report released on January 18 provided startling information about the new immigrant population:
“There are at least 617,607 aliens on Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) nondetained docket who have criminal convictions or pending criminal charges. That means that more than half a million criminal aliens are in U.S. communities, free to reoffend and victimize more Americans. At the same time, in fiscal year 2023, the Biden Administration removed nearly 60 percent fewer criminal aliens with criminal convictions and criminal charges than in fiscal year 2019.”
Such as it is, things can only get worse from here as politicians try to solve an unsolvable problem now that these people are inside the country. The mayor of Denver, Mike Johnston, says his city has reached the tipping point in dealing with “almost 40 thousand migrants in the last year.” In an interview with Fox’s Lawrence Jones, the Democratic mayor cried out for federal help, which would include “work authorization” for the illegals.
But that is a slippery slope. With work authorization comes the need to drive, and having a driver’s license is what one usually needs in order to – wait for it – vote. Thus, it seems that crime is only part of the problem when a country allows millions of people to cross its border unhindered. Aside from lawlessness, lack of respect for law enforcement, and crimes committed against citizens, Americans can expect these people to become future voters. Could this be the real reason why the Biden administration opened the border in the first place?
