Culture Corner: It’s Pink v Floyd All Over Again

Roger Waters reaches out to Floyd fans.

Roger Waters took to Twitter recently to let us know, “I rarely speak to fans of Pink Floyd, but that is what I’m doing now.”  (Don’t let Roger know that 99.9% of his fans are really just Pink Floyd fans.) Why did he?  To address the absence of his new rendition of “Mother” that did not make it on pinkfloyd.com.  “I am banned by David Gilmour from the website.”

Waters, we learn, convened a “Camp David” for all former members last year when he proposed “equal access for each of the five members of Pink Floyd” to the website and its visitors.  He famously left the band and then sued his colleagues who wished to carry on using the name Pink Floyd. He concluded his speech to the fans by letting them know that “[w]e should rise up – or just change the name of the band to Spinal Tap, and everything will be hunky-dory.”

Hope springs eternal – a few days after Waters’ tweet, pinkfloyd.com announced a new online channel called “Syd, Roger, Richard, Nick and David” with a new and evolving playlist from Pink Floyd.  No word yet on whether Sir Bob Geldof was involved.
