Immigration Roundup: Mexico’s Migrant Aid and ICE at the SOTU

President Trump is serious about Mexico’s involvement in stopping illegal immigration.

Editor’s note: When it comes to immigration – illegal or otherwise – the American people have a right to be concerned. Each week, Liberty Nation author Kelli Ballard will examine a contentious issue related to today’s hottest topic.

Is Mexico doing its fair share to help control the illegal immigration crisis? President Donald Trump warned that if Mexico doesn’t help stem the massive flood of people trying to gain access to the United States, he would strike back financially. At first, cooperation wasn’t exactly top of the order, but how about now?

Apparently, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has a healthy respect for Trump’s not-so-idle warnings and has been stepping up to the plate, battling back the swarm of travelers trying to force their way across the border.

Last month, thousands of migrants from Central America bombarded Mexican guards on a bridge at the Guatemalan border. Hundreds of guards stood along the banks of the river trying to block the massive influx of immigrants from crossing. Honduran migrants were even waving their flag and singing their country’s national anthem while approaching the bridge.

Immigrants were warned, via loudspeaker, that if they are trying to get through Mexico to the U.S., they may not be granted asylum in America – if they make it that far. President Obrador offered jobs to up to 4,000 travelers in the caravan in a bid to persuade them not to try and continue journeying to the United States.

The scene was obviously chaotic, but it looks as though Mexico is trying to keep up its end of the bargain and help stem the flood of illegals into the U.S.

The State of the Union address on Feb. 4 was nothing short of brilliance (on the president’s part) and absurd disrespect (on Nancy Pelosi’s end), and there were some tense moments when Trump talked about illegal immigration and the importance of law enforcement working with federal authorities (ICE) instead of against them.

The president talked about the senseless murder of a 92-year-old woman in New York, who was raped and then left with a broken spine and rib fractures lying outside in the cold. The suspect, Reeaz Khan, a 21-year-old Guyanese national, had been released from jail from an assault charge just a few weeks prior. The jail did not honor the detainer request by ICE and now New York City and its mayor are being sued by the immigration enforcement entity.

“Tragically, there are many cities in America where radical politicians have chosen to provide sanctuary for those criminal illegal aliens,” Trump said. “In sanctuary cities, local officials order police to release dangerous criminal aliens to prey upon the public, instead of handing them over to ICE to be safely removed.”
