It’s Never Enough: Trump Denounces White Supremacists, Dems Balk

Trump unequivocally condemns racism in public, puncturing Dems’ identity politics talking point.

Whatever President Donald Trump said to the nation in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, it was never going to be enough for the Dems. In fact, his remarks only fueled their rabid hatred precisely because he used the exact words his opponents have long demanded, thus undermining a favorite leftist talking point – that the president refuses to denounce white supremacists.

“In one voice,” the president said on Aug. 5 in a televised statement from the White House, “our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America.”

Dems Stubbornly Ignore Trump Remarks

The left constantly ties Trump to white supremacists and white nationalists. Democrats and their supporters in the establishment media have repeatedly called on the president to condemn unequivocally these ideologies. In reality, the last thing they wanted was for him to do so publicly: It is too important to the leftist identity politics agenda to connect the president with such extremist views.

Democratic 2020 hopefuls responded to Trump’s address as if he had not even mentioned racism or white supremacy. “[Trump’s] been racist from day one,” said Robert Francis O’Rourke, hoping to capitalize on the murder of 31 people to revive his failing bid for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

In a text message to campaign staff, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) – also discovering that no one wants him to be president – described Trump’s remarks as “a bulls**t soup of ineffective words.” Like most others on the left, Booker clearly is upset that the president soundly condemned white supremacism and racism. This undermines the credibility of Trump’s opponents, who have insisted for some time that his failure to distance himself from racist ideology effectively proves that Trump is a racist.

Some Problems More Valuable Than the Solutions

This is a standard tactic of leftists on any issue: The very moment their political opponents meet their demands or concede in any way, they immediately move the goalposts and proclaim that the concessions made simply are not enough.

For this reason, no significant measures will come out of Congress to combat gun violence. Any new laws proposed will be deemed insufficient. Most Democrats have no interest in reducing gun violence because, in reality, they want nothing less than a complete firearms ban, and every new mass shooting provides them the opportunity to talk about guns. The last thing the left would want is to agree to any measure that significantly would reduce the toll of mass shootings while leaving American citizens to own guns.

As with the illegal immigration problem, gun violence is far too valuable as a campaign and fundraising tool to work on meaningful solutions. Despite their phony tears over school shootings and their claims that no child should feel afraid at school, Democrats have not signaled approval of providing armed security for schools. Such a measure is obviously the quickest, cheapest, and most effective way to deal with active school shooters and protect students and staff. That mass school shootings could be prevented without taking guns away from law-abiding Americans, however, is – for the left – a worst-case scenario.

As for the alleged white supremacist Trump: Nothing he can do or say will ever stop his political enemies from labeling him as such. The fact that he is now on record as having denounced racism in words that cannot be misinterpreted is good for him and not so good for Democrats. Will the left’s narrative change? Unlikely. Such is the level of hate on the left that Trump’s words and actions can be utterly suspended for political gain.
