But this week she outdid herself. Speaking at an event held by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin, Merkel let it rip, taking a swipe at Brexit and President Trump in one fell swoop. Stating that countries should “be ready to give up sovereignty,” the leader of the Federal Republic of Germany apparently felt it her duty to lecture the world on nationalism and patriotism.
Merkel’s Definition Changer
It would be funny to hear a German leader pontificate on the definition of nationalism if it didn’t bring back flashbacks of holocaust and horror. Lest there be any doubt about what Ms. Merkel said, here is her exact quote:
“In this day nation states must today – should today, I say – be ready to give up sovereignty. But, of course, in an orderly procedure … either you are one of those who believe they can solve everything on their own and only have to think about themselves. That is nationalism in its purest form. This is not patriotism.”
Give up our sovereignty in “an orderly procedure”? That sounds awfully familiar coming from a German. If truth be told, they can be an orderly lot. And if you’re not willing to go along with them, then by golly they have a few tried and true methods that just might do the trick.
The Blowback
Ms. Merkel’s comments naturally sparked a good deal of blowback here in America. Retired U.S. Brigadier General Anthony Tata shot back with the following on Fox & Friends this weekend: “It sounds a lot like Germany 80 years ago. Merkel has clearly lost her way.”
Former White House adviser Sebastian Gorka went even further and cut down the German Chancellor in saying:
“It was America’s nationalism that saved the world from the Nazis, from the Third Reich and the imperialists of [General Hideki] Tojo’s Japan. [Merkel] has done more as one political individual to undermine the national sovereignty of the nation states of the EU than any other member.”
What Merkel implies but doesn’t say outright is that when nations give up their sovereign rights, someone else ends up with them. Yes, there is always an authority that rises to the top when it comes to world power. An elementary review of world history tells us that. But she doesn’t just stop at suggesting other countries establish hegemony over others; she denigrates patriotism, evidently reading from the same script as Emmanuel Macron. Merkel believes that putting one’s country first is not patriotic.

What is it then? As defined, patriotism is “devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country.” Must we turn this definition on its head to satisfy the power-lust of Ms. Merkel and those chomping at the EU bit to swallow up every country in sight? Without extrapolating too far, is she perhaps suggesting a ban on patriotism as a negative social construct?
Methinks this is the track that Merkel & Friends are on, without so much as a look back to what this type of reasoning has previously wrought. Make no mistake; this is a push to dominate Europe via the back door. And it’s not just happenstance that this type of rhetoric comes on the heels of an EU Brexit deal. Do the European Union powers lie awake with night sweats wondering who will be next to opt out of their little plan for world order? With populist political movements popping up all over, the EU increasingly finds itself playing a game of Wack-A-Mole, and they don’t like it one bit.
The German Chancellor’s comments were made during a speech defining the United Nations agreement on migration. Merkel. Migration. Shall we review just how well that has been working out in the Bundesrepublik Deutschland? Let’s not, because most of us already know.
It seems the goal of Merkel and her EU satraps is to spread this migrant mess worldwide. In the words of the late, great William F. Buckley, a “conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling stop.” And the United States of America has just the man to do that.
