Obama Looking To The States For Policy Victories

by | Apr 17, 2017 | Politics

Barack Obama and his allies have not stopped trying to fundamentally transform the United States of America.  We’re not even talking about undermining the Trump administration with wiretapped information or using loyalists now embedded in the bureaucracy to frustrate attempts at reform.  No, this is back to basics for the community organizer – retail politics designed to exert his influence to achieve policy and political victories in state and local governments.

Through both Organizing for Action and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, team Obama hopes to both win policy battles at the state and local levels, as well as turn purple states blue through creative redistricting and targeting rural voters.

Organizing for Action is the successor to Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and of Organizing for America, which itself succeeded Obama’s 2008 campaign.  The issues it concerns itself with are left-liberal talking points including climate change, immigration reform & gun violence prevention.  With this group, immigration reform does not mean enforcing immigration laws, and gun violence prevention means taking guns away from people or making sure they don’t get one in the first place.

The National Democratic Redistricting Committee, is led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, who the New York Times calls Obama’s chief collaborator and proxy.  Holder told the Times that “he and Mr. Obama believe Republicans have undermined the political system by creating a patchwork of legislative maps — at both the state and federal levels — that are designed to stifle the will of voters.”

A deeper read into what type of redistricting we should have yielded – surprise – not some party blind process, but one in which Dems win instead of Republicans.  So the same process applies, but with the Dems as winners who inappropriately draw lines to benefit their friends instead of the reverse.

The free market state policy group Virginia Institute for Public Policy (VIPP)* is working to confront these campaigns.  They are preparing to go head to head with both leftist organizations, providing resources to bolster already existing local organizations.  Offering an “operations toolkit,” VIPP Director of Policy and Operations Caleb Taylor told Liberty Nation they would fight Obama’s proxies in Richmond and throughout the state locally. They mean to stop the Progressives by helping to identify weaknesses and harness strengths of the many small groups throughout the state that advocate for smaller government.  They will do a ground-up assessment of any organization who asks, finding where trouble exists and planning how to fix it for the fight ahead.

Why Virginia?  Virginia looks like it will be ground zero in this fight in the states.  Governor Terry McAuliffe was included at the earliest stages of organizational planning, even while Obama was still President.  With its purplish electoral hue and proximity to so many consultants and operatives, to say nothing of the Obamas and Holder, Virginia would be a great model to roll out the campaign nationwide to other swing states and swing districts.  As the Times tells us, “[t]he next round of congressional redistricting is still years away, after the next census in 2020. But the officials drawing the maps in most states will be chosen in elections well before then, starting with the election for governor in Virginia this year.”
