On a normally reasonable website, Lew Rockwell today has a disappointing post lamenting the celebration of Memorial Day. Furthermore, the author offers the sophomoric suggestion of celebrating the last Monday in May by watching (mostly) vulgar, leftist, and godless anti-war movies. This type of nonsense accomplishes nothing except needlessly offending people.
Is it not possible to debate U.S. foreign policy without disparaging the memories of dead veterans? This is not academic. There are real families who have lost real family members in war – some of very recently. There are real families who have real family members currently serving in war zones right now. It”s not as if the average American soldier is bloodthirsty mercenary who enjoys killing and looting for pay.
Would Mr. Shaffer have the courage to spew his vitriol in the face of parents who have lost a son in Iraq or Afghanistan? Since the specter of parades and wreath-laying is too repulsive for him, maybe he should take a bullhorn down his local VFW today and let loose a tirade about excess American imperialism. It is a sad indictment when the leftist Huffington Post is more respectful of Memorial Day than Lew Rockwell – or the U.S. President for that matter.
